Glenwood off to hot start on diamond

Taylor Kaufman and Drake Ruth combined for a no-hit, 1-0 Glenwood victory over Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson on Friday.

The win was Class 3A, No. 2-ranked Rams’ third straight to open the season.

Kaufman started the game and fanned 10 in five innings before giving way to Ruth in the sixth. Kaufman (1-0) earned the win and Ruth the save.

Kaufman and left-fielder Kyle Wheeler each had one of the Rams’ two hits. Kaufman also drew a walk, stole a base and scored the game’s lone run.

A-H-S-T 3

Senior Nick Wells pitched five innings of scoreless baseball to earn his first varsity pitching victory for Glenwood in a 13-3 win over A-H-S-T on Thursday.

Wells, a 6-foot-4 right hander, struck out seven and scattered four hits over five innings. Wells also went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs.

Grant Loeffelbein went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Taylor Kaufman added two hits and two RBIs.

Neola Tri-Center 6

The Glenwood offense banged out 20 hits in a 16-6 “mercy rule” shortened season opening victory over Neola Tri-Center last Tuesday.

Six different Rams had at least two hits in the win, led by Josh DeYoung’s 4-for-5 game. The senior first baseman belted two home runs and a double while driving in eight runs.

Taylor Kaufman added three hits and Bryan Harless, Nick Wells, Drew Howell and Grant Loeffelbein added two each.

Harless started the game on the hill, striking out five and allowed two earned runs over four innings to earn the win.
