The Glenwood wrestling team placed fifth at the Hawkeye 10 Conference wrestling meet on Saturday at Clarinda.
Creston crowned five individual champions to rack up 241.5 points and win its first Hawkeye 10 title since 1988. Atlantic was the runner up with 226.5 points. Council Bluffs Lewis Central, which had won five straight conference titles entering this year’s tournament, finished third with 174 points.
Glenwood had two wrestlers reach the finals and placed fifth as team with 131.5 points.
Glenwood coach Brad Asche said he was a little disappointed with his team’s placing but he can’t fault the effort.
“I thought we could be up there in the top three,” Asche said. “Obviously we didn’t have quite enough fire power to beat Creston or Atlantic, but they’re better tournament teams and we’re a better dual team.”
Seth Warren (126 pounds) and Hunter Hoffman (182 pounds) both reached the finals in their weight classes for Glenwood.
Warren lost an 8-1 decision to Kuemper Catholic’s Alexander Schmitz in the final to finish second.
Hoffman battled state-ranked and defending Hawkeye 10 champion Seth Esais before falling by pin in their match.
“They both wrestled really good,” Asche said of Warren and Hoffman. “They got a couple of really tough kids in the finals. They’ve wrestled like that all year for he most part and they’ve bought into the program. They’re doing everything the coaches asked them to do when they go out there.”
Sam Jameson (120 pounds) and Jesse Bendt (132) both earned third place finishes. Cody Crouch (170), A.J. Clark (138) and Josh Clark (145) all earned fourth place medals. Jonah Strand (152) placed fifth while Chase Evans (106) and Zach Magnussen (160) both placed sixth.
“February is where we need to peak anyway so two weeks is where we really need to show up. All this is kind of a practice for what’s to come. We’re looking forward to districts and getting better,” Asche said.
Glenwood host the Class 3A districts on Feb. 11. Matches will begin at 12 noon.
