With weather not allowing many teams to make the scheduled Atlantic Invitational on Friday, the Glenwood wrestling team traveled to Atlantic for a dual against Atlantic and Winterset.

The Rams won eight of 14 matches for a 49-28 victory over Winterset. Glenwood followed up the Winterset win with a 36-28 dual victory over the host Trojans.

“I thought we were kind of flat against Winterset. Not being able to have practice on Thursday and then the kids sitting around all day Friday it was expected that we might not perform as well as we should have in that first dual,” said Glenwood coach Matt Dyer. “Against Atlantic, I thought we looked really good. That’s probably the best we have looked all year. We had a lot of things go our way in that dual.”

Against the Trojans, the Rams got victories from A.J. Clark, Nate Harms, Steve Gutschenritter, Tyler Maxwell, Walker Langel, Nick Uphoff, Trent Jameson and Joey Bryan.

Both Harms and Bryan defeated opponents they had never beaten before.

“Our kids did a great job stepping up to a tough challenge. Atlantic put 60 points up on us last year so we had something to prove,” said Dyer.

As his team heads into Christmas break, Dyer isn’t about to let them rest on their laurels after compiling a 7-1 dual record so far this season.

“We can’t rest on this success,” he said. We will face them (Atlantic) again Jan. 3 at a dual team tournament so we have to have things ready to go again. We have to use these practices over break to get better at our technique and get into better shape. I am really proud of how these guys are coming along. They have worked really hard this first month.”

Rams sweep Creston, Denison

The Glenwood wrestling team swept a pair of Hawkeye 10 Conference duals last Tuesday with wins over Creston and Denison.

The Rams knocked off Creston 57-21 and followed that up with a 58-15 win over the Monarchs.

“I thought the kids wrestled really well tonight,” said Glenwood coach Matt Dyer. “We only have two home meets this year so it was nice to go out and perform for our parents and crowd. Creston and Denison have low numbers this year and I feel bad for our other kids who didn’t get a match.

“Overall I think the guys are looking good. We are making improvements each week and at each event. We finished out this month 5-1 and I am really proud of our guys for doing so well so far.”

A.J. Clark, Nate Harms, Steve Gutschenritter, Walker Langel, Tyler Maxwell, Jacob Saddler, Joey Bryan and Colin White all won both of their matches at the dual.
