ATLANTIC - The Glenwood boys won their fourth straight district title and the girls placed second at the Class 3A districts held in Atlantic Thursday.

The boys and girls each qualified in 10 events for this week’s Iowa State Track Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Class 3A competition gets underway with the field events beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Glenwood’s boys squad out-scored runner up Carroll 139 to 114 in the team standings for their fourth straight district tile and sixth in the last seven years. The girls trailed district champion Green County 135 to 124 for their runner up finish.

The boys team got individual top performances from Dane Kruse in the 110-meter high hurdles and Brady Wheeler in the 400 and added relay golds in the distance medley and 4x200-meter relay.

Glenwood also used its superior depth to get state bids from Nolan Eflin in the 400-meter hurdles, Mavrick Decker in the 100 and 200-meters and from its 4x100-meter and shuttle hurdle relay teams.

“The weather wasn’t always conducive for good times, but we ran outstanding times in the 110 high hurdles (Kruse) and the 4 x 200 relay,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner. “Both of those performances were season’s best.”
Decker, a freshman, placed third in both the 100 and 200 meters but his 11.49 and 23.23 times, respectively, were both good enough to earn at-large bids to state.

Glenwood struggled early to score points, coming out of the field events with a sizable deficit to Carroll who scored golds in four field events to score 40 points before a single running event. But the Rams would bounce back.
Damon Harrill and Jaron Springer’s fourth and fifth place finishes in the 800-meters netted the Rams’ nine key points and locked up the district team title.

“The coaching staff is very proud of the team in how they have persevered and have continued to battle throughout the year and finished the season undefeated,” Starner said. “This senior class has finished undefeated at home, in conference meets and in district meets all four years.  That’s pretty impressive.”

Miranda Ruth paced the Glenwood girls team to a second place district showing by punching her ticket to state in two individual events after placing fifth in a highly competitive 100-meter hurdles and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles. Ruth ran one of the eighth fastest times in both events among the non-automatic state qualifiers to earn her at-large bids. Ruth also ran a leg of the Rams shuttle hurdle relay team that placed fourth at Atlantic but won an at-large bid.
The Rams’ Courtney Magnussen (100-meters) and Kecia Caudill (200-meters) both punched their tickets to state at regionals.

The Rams had five qualifiers alone from its strong field event group with Sarah Salerno earning a second trip to state in the long jump. Joining Salerno at state will be Jacey Embray in shot, Linnaea Konfrst and Bailey Starner in the discus and Molly Dean in the high jump.
