The Glenwood boys track team won its fifth meet of the season last Tuesday out pacing Atlantic 142 to 131 at the Council Bluffs Lewis Central Co-Ed Track Meet.

“This was a great meet for us heading into a Drake Relays break,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner. “Having missed qualifying in two events by a combined time of eight hundredths of a second in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 4 x 100-mete relay we still wanted to prove that we are a team to be aware of in the team title at every meet.

“Almost every team in the field had qualified some or multiple events for Drake and we just wanted to prove something to those teams. We came out and proved that we're pretty tough as a team and ran some times that definetly proved that.”

Although the Rams won just three events -- Johnny Fuller in the 1,600-meters, Kyle Wheeler in the 800 and the shuttle hurdle relay -- they set 15 season or personal-records on the day.

Wheeler’s time of 1:59.96 was the fastest in southwest Iowa this season and the best ever for a Ram sophomore, It also put him fifth on the school’s all time charts.

Fuller’s 4:43.48 in the mile was a season-best.

“I believe he's coming around and shaking off that early season injury,” said Starner of his star distance runner.

Bo Darrow was a triple place winner for Glenwood in the high jump (6 feet) and the 110-meter high hurdles (third) and as the anchor of the shuttle hurdle relay. Senion Ian Eflin, also a member of the Rams’ shuttle hurdle relay team, won three medals as well, placing second in the 110-meter high hurdles and third in the high jump.

“Hopefully this will help give us some momentum going into our last home meet of the season as well as gaining some momentum into the championship portion of our schedule with conference and districts quickly approaching,” said Starner.

The Glenwood girls placed fifth at the meet with 78 team points.

Harlan was the team champion with 172 points.

Glenwood didn’t win first place in any event but had strong showings in several events, said coach Brad Rasmussen.

Lydia Bienlien took third place in the long jump, 200 and 400-meters.‘ The Rams took fourth in the distance medley, 4x100-meter and shuttle hurdle relays.

Shaneice Not was fourth in the 100-meters and Jenna Turcotte third in the 800-meters.
