Former Glenwood police officer and 2013 Glenwood mayoral candidate Douglas Trent Good has been identified as the man who sustained an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg while waiting in a vehicle for a child in the lower playground parking lot of West Elementary School Friday afternoon. Good was transported from the scene to a metro area hospital by Glenwood Rescue. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Good is a certified firearms instructor, providing gun handling instruction to individuals seeking a permit to carry.
The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. after students had been released from classes.
Preliminary reports from law enforcement officers on the scene indicate Good drove his vehicle onto the playground to pick up a child from school. He allegedly shot himself in the leg with a 9mm handgun that was inside the vehicle.
No one else was injured in the incident. A child appearing to be 2 or 3 years old was removed from a child safety seat in the back seat of the vehicle by Glenwood police officers.
A handful of children and parents making after-school pickups were on the playground when the shooting took place.
The Glenwood Police Department and Mills County Attorney's Office are continuing an investigation into the incident.
