Russell Crouch Facing Sexual, Alcohol-related Charges

Criminal charges have been filed against a former Glenwood Community High School social studies teacher.

Russell Crouch, 38, is facing charges of sexual exploitation by a school employee, an aggravated misdemeanor, and supplying alcohol to a minor, a serious misdemeanor. He was arrested Friday afternoon after turning himself in to authorities. If convicted of the charges, Crouch could face up to three years in prison and possible fines up to $6,250. He would also have to register as a sex offender.

According to the Mills County Attorney’s Office, Crouch is accused of having a sexual relationship with a GCHS student and supplying alcohol to a different student. His bond was set at $3,000 and a court date has not been set.

Crouch was a popular teacher and speech and drama coach at GCHS before submitting his resignation May 18, two days after being placed on administrative leave. The Glenwood School Board accepted Crouch’s resignation at a May 22 special meeting.

“Over the past month, I have been debating as to whether high school education is the route that I should continue on,” Crouch stated in his resignation letter. “As much as I love teaching, I don’t believe that teaching at Glenwood High School is the right place for me.

“Please accept my resignation as a high school social studies teacher as well as any extra duty assignments that I currently have.”

Glenwood Police Chief Eric Johansen said his department initiated an investigation in mid May into an alleged inappropriate relationship Crouch had with a female student after receiving a citizen complaint. Johansen said the school district had already started an internal investigation of its own prior to being contacted by police investigators.

Crouch did not return telephone messages from The Opinion-Tribune in the days prior to his arrest.

The Opinion-Tribune will update the story as more information becomes available.
