Fremont-Mills edges East Mills for fifth straight Corner Conference boys track title

By Joel Stevens, Associate Editor

    TABOR - Five-peat?
Fremont-Mills track coach Mike Wood isn’t sure what to call his team’s fifth straight Corner Conference track title. He’s just happy his team was able to edge East Mills for just the second time this season.

“We’re very excited,” Wood said. “We’d been battling back and fourth with East Mills all season. We really wanted to put some pencil to paper this meet and figure out where we could score points and play the ‘What if…’ game. There are so many variable to consider in track.”
The biggest variable for the Knights might just have been their field events. Fremont-Mills finished with 161 team points to East Mills’ 134. Stanton was a distant third with 79 points. The Knights racked up a whopping 68 points in the four field events before ever hitting the track.  The Knights earned first and second in the discus, the shot put and the high jump and they were second and third in the long jump.
“Without those, it’s a whole different outcome,” Wood said. “If we don’t score 68 points coming out of the field, we don’t win the meet. It comes down to a handful of events.”
In all, the Knights won eight gold medals, a season high, Wood said, against a full and competitive roster of teams.
Kevin Herrick won gold in the 400-meters and the high jump. A.J. Scarborough broke his own meet record with a gold medal throw of 151 feet, 2 inches, while Dallas Franks added a gold in the shot and Clayton Wilson in the 110-meter hurdles.
The Knights’ shuttle hurdle and distance medley relays both won gold.
Nick Pittmon put on a show for the runner-up Wolverines. The junior broke a 47-year-old meet record in the 100-meter after clocking a 10.72. Pittmon added golds in the 200-meters and the long jump and ran the anchor leg of the Wolverines’ gold medal winning 4x100-meter relay.
“He is the real deal,” Wood said of Pittmon.
On the girls’ side, Villisca retained its title from last season, edging Fremont-Mills 128 to 119.
Freshman Kelsey Hurley won the 200 and 400-meters and the high jump while placing second in the 100-meters.
Fellow freshman Macy Williams won the 800 and the 1,500-meters.
The East Mills girls placed sixth with 33 points. The Wolverines’ lone gold came in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:56.57.
