TABOR – It was a happy homecoming for Fremont-Mills Friday night as the Knights rolled to a hard-fought 45-34 victory over CAM.

Quarterback Jason Rusten passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Knights improved their record to 2-1.

“They (CAM) were everything we expected,” Fremont-Mills coach Jeremy Christiansen said. “Physically, I thought we were able to handle them. Defensively, I thought we played well until we’d have a blown assignment.”

The first half of the game was a seesaw contest with the Knights and Cougars trading the lead five teams.

With CAM leading 8-6 midway through the first quarter, Christopher Goodman returned an interception to the Cougars’ 10-yard line. The Knights capitalized on the turnover with a 10-yard blast by running back Spencer Phillips.

Leading 13-8, Fremont-Mills recovered a fumbled punt by CAM and was on the verge of punching in another touchdown when the Knights coughed the ball up themselves on the Cougars’ goal line.

After the F-M fumble, CAM recaptured the lead momentarily on a touchdown run by Trace Ticknor, but the Knights answered with an unusual score of their own when Phillips was stopped on a running play at midfield, but pitched the ball back to Rusten before being tackled to the ground. Rusten took the pitch and scampered to the end zone untouched. The Knights converted the PAT to go up 20-14 and would never trail again.

Fremont-Mills went ahead 26-14 before halftime on a Makenzie Lang touchdown and increased its lead to 32-14 in the third quarter on a 49 yard TD pass from Rusten to Lang.

The teams traded touchdowns the rest of the night with the Cougars never getting closer than 10 points. The Knights iced the game by going ahead 45-28 on another Lang TD with 3:18 left in the game.

Offensively, Fremont-Mills finished the game with 332 yards rushing and 208 passing. Lang scored four touchdowns and Phillips was the Knights’ leading rusher with 208 yards on 37 carries. He also had a team-high 15 tackles. Parker Powers was in on 10 stops.

The Knights are on the road this Friday, taking on Essex.

“I’m expecting them (Essex) to be a scrappy team that’s ready to play,” Christiansen said.
