The East Mills girls basketball team recorded its first win of the season on Thursday with a 57-30 victory over Clarinda Academy.

The game served as a benefit for Villisca senior Joel Herzberg, who was seriously injured in a skiing accident over Christmas break.

Katie Fritz had 18 points, 14 rebounds and five assists to lead the Wolverines (1-13 overall, 1-6 in the Corner Conference). Shelby Sommerla had 12 points and five steals in the win.

“I was proud of the girls for making last minute adjustments in our player rotations and positions, but it’s tough when we are missing four or five girls to either injuries, sickness, or grades all year,” said East Mills Coach Brian Bertini.

“It was nice to see the girls get that win, and hopefully now we can build on that and gain some momentum heading down the stretch.”
