Balanced Wolverines too much for Rebels

East Mills’ balanced offense put up 55 first-half points in a 62-6 defeat of South Page on Friday in Eight Man, District 8.

The Wolverines (4-1 overall, 2-1 in the district) rushed for its second highest rushing total of the season with 213 yards and passed for another 175 in the win.
“We kind of knew what kind of game this might be going into it so we came in knowing we wanted to work on a few things, in particular the running game,” said East Mills coach Andy Irwin. “We pass quite a bit but we want to be balanced so we wanted to work on our run game and we did that.”
Irwin and offensive coordinator Kevin Schafer spread the work out evenly with no back getting more than 11 carries and four different runners scoring touchdowns. Brandon Clemmons carried the ball just twice for 64 yards but both of his touches went for scores. Kyle Steiner added 56 yards and a score.
“We’re very happy with Kyle Steiner and how he’s running,” said Irwin. “When he’s gotten opportunities he’s run well for us. It’s always nice to have younger kids that can come in and run the ball and do the things we want to do offensively.”
Clemmons, the Wolverines’ leading rusher and second leading receiver this season, added a touchdown receiving in the win.
“He’s been a kid whose always been a good performer for us. He was in the state track meet last year, he’s a good athlete. It’s nice we can have him rush it or catch the ball,” said Irwin.
Quarterback Luke Schafer completed 12-of-16 passes for 175 yards and four touchdowns.
