Construction workers were literally hanging from the rafters of the Davies Amphitheater last week as extensive restoration work on the 33-year-old facility got underway.

“Things are moving along down there pretty well,” Davies Amphitheater manager Gordon Woodrow said Monday. “I guess we’re talking another couple weeks for this first phase.”

The first phase of the restoration project will include a replacement of the amphitheater’s shingled roof and restoration and painting of metal grating and steel beams. Wood and shingles were removed last week and painting was expected to commence this week.

Woodrow said the work taking place in June won’t disrupt the amphitheater’s lineup of entertainment or create an inconvenience for patrons.

Brick restoration work on the amphitheater’s facade won’t be carried out until late summer and early fall, after the amphitheater’s summer season is completed. Pinnacle Construction of Glenwood is the general contractor for the project.

Woodrow noted donations are still needed to help fund the restoration project. Phase I of the project is projected to carry a price tag of $100,000 - $115,000.
